Award-winning film-maker Shams Bhanji evokes a provocative but empowering vision of life on Zanzibar, the ‘Marriage Island’. The series seduces as much as it confronts us with a disturbing depiction of a society trapped in its own traditions. Nadya –beautiful, intelligent, and ambitious – is aware that she must educate herself in order to improve her life and expand her horizons. However, her traditional family is inclined to follow the society norm of early marriage. Nadya has learnt a radical idea at college: that women can empower themselves and choose who they will marry. However, to pay her college fees, Nadya must work by night as an exotic dancer in seedy clubs, for the pleasure of lusty men. Meanwhile, Nadya’s mother is planning to force her daughter to marry an uneducated son of a rich and ruthless businessman. Nadya resolves to escape. With the help of her well-meaning, but naïve English professor, she concocts a plan to escape on her wedding night and leave her cocooned life far behind. This daring move creates havoc and resentment especially from her father in law who vows to hunt her down.
