Sita, a 15-year-old girl lives with her parents, Salfou and Fatou, in a small Burkinabe village. Taking advantage of the absence of Adama, Sita's boyfriend, who had gone abroad to make a fortune, Salfou promised her daughter in marriage to Drissa, a rich and polygamous old man. When Adama returns to the village, he arranges to see Sita in secret, but Drissa knows about these appointments, captures the two lovers and takes them to the customary court. The chief decides the dispute in Drissa's favour. On the wedding night, while Drissa waits impatiently for her new wife, Sita and Adama flee to town, with the help of Fatou and other women in the village. Salfou is sent to town to find his daughter and bring her back to the village. He returns with the fugitive couple but during the journey, he sympathized with Adama. Drissa has the court convened to hear the case. Supported by the women of the village, Sita categorically refuses to go back to the old man's house. The court ruled in her favour, while Drissa publicly renounced Sita and gave the young lovers the dowry that Salfou had paid her.
